Work Safe Reminder

My 26 year old neighbor & friend was killed last thurs. when a van he was working(in driveway) on fell off the supports and crushed him. He was a mechanic and family man, very sad times obviously.
When working out in the garage the other morning I hear my neighbor banging away under his Ford Explorer....I go over and look and here he is underneath with the front wheel off wailing on the exhaust system.
All that is supporting the truck is one of those crappy little $50. floor jacks
I go home and bring back some 3 ton jack stands and support the truck properly, he kind of goes oh yea, guess that would be a good idea, I just said I didn't feel like dragging him out from under after it fell on him.

Speaking of working safely, I got the shock of my life from my '82 yesterday. I have one of those 300+ ignition boxes from Accel and for some reason (found out later it's the cam and crank sensors on the distributor) the computer wasn't telling the box to fire. Well, I was testing the coil wire with the old ground with a screwdriver trick when I decided the thing wasn't going to fire, and I pulled the screwdriver farther away. Needless to say it fired and sent a spark through me. Knocked me back a couple feet and made my hand numb for about an hour, but it's all good
I was under the engine and it hit my back and rolled off to the side and crushed he fender.
It was okay as it was a junk car, but I was a little upset I did not check where my buddy had placed that hook.

When I get under the car I use 4 jack stands and I have 2, 3 ton jacks and one scissor jack place in various different positions, I also have one of my 295/50/15 tires placed under the diff, I don't want to get squished

Sorry to hear about your friend and neighbor.

No where near as serious, but, years ago, my friend lifted the FR corner of his 77 'bu(what a huge, crap car) just to check a suspicious noise. He knows better then to go under so he was reaching around and over the tire(which is turned) to check something when the jack tips and pins his arm between the tire and fender. He was able to lift it off and get free and got away with only a chip in the bone and a serious bruise. Others would not have been so lucky, because he is quite a bit stronger then most(240 lbs of muscle). The moral is don't think just because you're not going under you don't need stands and make sure the ground they're on is solid(in his defence, he had none were he lived, but should have used some plywood or blocks or whatever).
