First time posting here; usually in C1 & C2 and CFOT, but a bud of mine is looking for kick panel speakers for a '79 Vette. Everyone keeps trying to sell him dash speakers. Any help/suggestions?
70 and up did not have kick panel speakers which is why everyone is telling your bud about dash speakers. 4 x 10s were installed behind the kick panels on the 68 and 69 models. 4 x 6 will also fit behind the kick panels.
He could mount a pair of 68-69 4 x 10s if he wants.
Rear speakers were optional on the '79s, so your bud could also use those mounting points.
You are right the kick panel is a better location.
Kick panel speaker loc. (77 measured) is about 5 3/4" H X 4" W X 2 1/4" D. 4X6 fit easily. Some 5 1/4 can be fitted & a mounting plate is needed. There is not enough airspace behind to optimize 6.5s which should go into doors.
I put Kenwood 5- 1/4" coaxials in my kickpanels suing 1/8" abs plastic as a baffle to fill the oblong opening. You can use 1/8" mdf wood as well. My stock kickpanel fit back on with no problem.
Check out some shallow 6.5" speakers, the bigger the woofer the better the mid-bass sound.
It sounds "ok" running off the radio, but I would suggest putting an amp behind any speaker your buddy decide's on.
Thanks for taking the effort to provide a picture, Dude...it is much appreciated! I've advised my buddy to join this Forum for the wealth of information contained within + the SUPER-FAST replies!
I put Kicker 6.5 in mne. Speaker dept was a problem so I used Metra speaker extensions. Sounds excellent. I also added power mirrors to the car so I placed the tweeter where the mirror control was located.
I was putting in a Keisler 5 speed. That is why you see no shifter
