Default Mono Rear Spring Install, Nice

Well I finally did it. I installed the 330# mono rear spring and new KYB shocks on Saturday. Took about two hours to do the whole job, I'm an amateur mechanic with simple hand tools. For those who plan to do the job I have one piece of advice. Unload the trailing arms before unbolting the sway bar. If not, BOING.

It was a fairly easy install, with no major problems. And wow, what a difference the new rear spring and shocks make. Driving the car now is a pleasure compared to before. The squeaky loud rear suspension is gone. Replaced with a firm, quiet, smooth ride. It also lowered the rear of the car about 2". It sits at 27-1/2" at the center of the wheel opening.

Now I just have to install the 550# springs and KYB shocks I have for the front and I'll be all hooked up. It now sits a little higher in the front than it does in the back. Also it looks as if the rear wheels are leaning in now, not quite square to the pavement. I'm hoping installing the front springs and a four-wheel alignment fix that.

There had been reports that KYB's were a bit firm for a comortable street ride,..but you seem to be happy with this combo. On a scale of 1-10 (1 = a Nascar; 10 = a 1976 Cadillac Sedan Deville), where would you rank the stiffness?

Well, I’ve never been in a NASCAR, or a ’76 Cadillac Sedan Deville for that matter. But I will say this; it is much smoother than the stock pieces. When I say smooth, I don’t mean a floating type of ride that you have with a luxury car, I mean that it handles the bumps smoothly. I’ll say smooth, but firm, if that makes any sense. The rear spring squeaked loudly and was abrupt over the rough stuff. So, I’m quite pleased, I wish I would have made this update years ago.

Once I get the front coils and shocks installed I’ll set the ride height and get a four wheel alignment. Then, on goes the modern wheel package.
