Default Paint Brands

I have been window shopping for paint for my 77 and I was surprised when I was quoated $300 dollars for PPG base coat alone the cost of everything PPG with primers would cost right at $800 dollars. Sherwin Williams quoated me $600 dollars for the gallon of their base coat. These prices dont include the reducers or hi build primer. A friend of mine who works in a body shop mentioned Matrix paint or possible Glasurit paint. Has anyone ever used any of these paints? I have viewed both of their websites but they can say anything but I would like to hear from anyone that has used it. Thanks

I really like shooting Glasurit but it costs more than PPG. Try PPG's Omni line or Shop line for less money. You can try SPI Southern Polyureathanes Inc. Google them, excellent paint and a bit cheaper.

PPG is my favorite. Their omni line is cheaper, but the paint is thinner and usually takes an extra coat to cover. Matrix seems to work nice, too.

Whatch out for sherwin williams ultra 7000. Sherwin Williams also has bad tech support when you need them. Here is a pic of my Ultra 7000 Base Coat Clear Coat. The paint is peeling from the Sherwin Williams Sealer. I have tried to contact them many times by phone and email with no luck.

Walk-In trade at bodyshop supply houses get charged full retail for supplies unless you "know" somebody.

I mixed paint & sold DuPont supplies in an autoparts store, and they have different price schemes based upon who you are.

Here is an example.... go to Home Depot/Lowes & get a gallon of Lacquer thinner... about $12.00.

Buy it through a friend at a body shop (gun cleaning grade)... $15 for 5 gallons.

It's going to get worse when they pass the laws restricting the sale of "professional" bodyshop supplies to bodyshops only.

Ben Dover is in charge.

Glasurit is highly rated, FORGET Sherwin Williams... I used there high end, I forget what its called but its their best... And the clear is soft.. Looks mint polished, but it scratches way to easy. If I lean on the fender when its warm you can see an imprint of my jeans, every thread... I washed it with a soft car brush and you can see every direction the brush was pulled on the car....

PPG Global is good, but I would go with Sikkens or Glasurit. Any high end paint will cost you around $1000. give or take a couple of hundred. But its not worth saving a few hundred after all the time and work involved...

I hear your pain. I've spent the last 8 months on and off sanding and prepping the vette. There is a PPG dealer by my work so I went with them for convenience, and I want someone I can strangle if something goes wrong. After my primer coat, build coat, color and clear I'm up over $1000. To show it’s a custom paint job I painted all the undersides of the roof, hood, doors, and door jams in a one stage base clear satin black. It came out with a little orange peel, like a factory job. I wanted to save my color coat for the real stuff. It’s a pearl dark blue, and was about $400/gal.

I’m new at the car painting seen so others can tell you much more, but my best purchase yet was an HVLP gun ($150). I had a siphon gun that I was using, and the HVLP is so much better at getting the product on the vehicle, and not bouncing in the air, it’s amazing.

I own a large bodyshop and have used Sherwin, Dupont, Akzo Nobel, and PPG. We have always went back to PPG anytime we tried a new line. The only time we ever left PPG was because of a big sign on bonus, never because of a problem. We have 3 PPG mixing systems inhouse, DBC, Shopline, & Delfleet. Shopline in my opinion would be your best bet, it's got a lot of new technology in the clear, and thats were your durability is. We have not had any poor coverage problems with Shopline or Omni that warrants a better deal using DBC.
None of the main manufacturers make a bad paint, we just like the PPG best for our shop.
