Default compact spare tire

When I bought my 71, it didn't have the spare tire or carrier. I keep a couple cans of fix-a-flat in the car. I've been considering getting the spare tire trays, and I was wondering if anyone here uses a compact spare? Is there even a compact spare made that fits?

You could probably use the compact spare on the later model C3s. It fits in the standard tire tub and can be fully inflated.

Just don't use it on the rear for very far unless it's the same diameter as the other tires. If they are different sizes the posi rear thinks you are always going around a curve and this will burn out the clutches pretty quickly if you drive too far with mismatched rears.

Although I have heard of using them and swapping a front for a flat rear and putting the compact spare on the front. FWIW.

Good Luck!

Thanks - I would never have known that I think I'll just go with the full size spare (if I do anything).

Default Compact Spare Tire

Another idea is to convert your C3 tire carrier to the smaller C4 carrier with a "donut" tire. They are only good for 50 miles or so, but fully inflated it would make it easier to roll the car up on the wrecker.

Well a couple years ago I had never thought of it either. It was pointed out to me and it made so much sense once I thought about it. That's also when I was told about still using a compact spare but if you get a flat in the rear you have to put a full sized front on the rear and the compact spare on the front.

When I serviced the diff on my 75 a few years ago I ended up just leaving the carrier off and I now just carry a can of fix a flat, a plug repair kit and a small 12V air compressor. If that's not enough to get the job done, I also carry a cell phone and my AAA card. That should take care of any issue that may arise. Luckily so far I've never needed any of them.

Good Luck!

'78 up all had space saver spares from the factory. I believe the rim size is 15 x 5.

You can run up to 225R70-15 in the stock spare tub.
