I told a friend of mine last night I was thinking of putting an 8-track player in my 73 for nostalgic reasons. He looked at me a little funny, left the room, came back and handed me a factory 77 Corvette in-dash 8-track player. Freebe
I don't think this unit was offered untill 77, so I'd appreciate is someone can tell me if it will plug into my factory AM/FM wire harness and run through the dash speaker.
Doesn't really matter. The chances of finding an 8-track that will play after all this time is slim to none. Magnetic tape is only good for about ten years.
Interesting idea, but there would be some customization of your bezel....the area around the ***** on the '73 is curved....on '77 it's flat...etc.....I can't comment on the wiring....
Those 8 track tapes were big....I just looked up some supposed Vette 8track radios on ebay and I see an eject button but no place for the tape......I know you said it's an in dash unit, but is the actual player remotely located ?
I have the factory one in my '80. The radio dial will fold out of the way if you push on it and that is where the tape goes - right smack in the middle.

Someone put an 8-track in my 70's rear compartment. They then put speakers in the kick pannels. All my parents old 8-tracks work and play in it. Right now i have an old Rolling Stones 8-track in it and it plays great!
I put the origanal 8 track back in my 79, Works great. At cruse ins I always leave a 8 track in. It usually is a big hit for most people under 40 don't have any idea what it is. The dad's my age always bring there kids over to my car to show them what a 8 track is. My daughter in law, 21 years old, asked me if that is what a cassette tape is, I just laugh and say no, the 8 track was pre cassette time. I will never take mine out it is a great conversational piece.
Oh, did I mention that a origanal 8 track player that works is worth some decent $$$$, they are not reproduced.
I installed a Pioneer 8 track with 4 speakes (2 in each door) in my 68 Camaro......what a sound...to have stero seperation right/left was just too cool back in the day.
Unforturtunately, it does look like it's going to fit without mods. I was hoping to get it in there for the conversation piece at the shows. I ran a search for the top albums in 73 so I can look for the right tapes at the flee markets this summer.
Here's a list of the albums I had back in the day on 8-Track
Dark Side of the moon - Pink Floyd
Quadrophenia - The Who
Houses of the Holy - Led Zepplin
Countdown to Exstacy - Steely Dan
Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nern - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Tanx - T-Rex
In the right place - Dr. John
Dixie Chicken - Little Feat
Band on the Run - Paul McCartney & Wings
Tres Hombres - ZZ Top

Over the winter, I hunted down the top 100 songs of 75-79 in MP3 form.
Eventually, I plan to make up a few cassette tapes with my favorites.
I thought it would be real fun if my car only played the hits from the 70's.
Basically, take an old cassette recorder, and hook your speaker-out to the line-in.
You could do the same thing with 8-tracks.
I see quite a few down at the thrift store - real cheap!
I have a 8 track in my new car. People really like it at the car shows. I think it brings back memories of younger days. I say put one in, even if just for looks.
Sure, put it in. I had one in my 75 that I got off ebay. You can find them there for like $20 even new ones for sale. Its fun to collect the tapes too that you can get off ebay. There are 1,540 on there now.
I found this too for $100 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1977-...09548140QQrdZ1
Gee every time I some one brings up the subject of
8-tracks I think of the person or persons who had force their way in to my car, removing my 8 track,
but didn't like my music selections. Freddy Fender
was still there with a number of my other favorites. Were my feelings hurt or what ?
