Default Petronix Ignitor and Flame Thrower Coil

Hello all,
1974, 350 Auto.
A year or so ago I fitted a 12V negative earth Petronix Ignitor system to replace the breaker points and at the same time fitted their Flame Thrower coil.
And changed the plug gaps from 0.035 to 0.040

I fitted the ignitor no problem and the +ve is wired to a switched 12V source that is live during cranking (from the fuse box).

The coil however is still connected to the old resistance wire circuit and currently sees 8V.

Any opinions - is this correct or should it also use 12V ?

I'm NOT having any issues with this installation, just thought I should ask, in case 12V would be better.

If all else fails, read the instructions........

The coil instructions should tell you if the resistor is required. They are designed to either work with the resistor or not. If it is designed to work with a resistor then running full 12V to the coil will burn it (and possibly the Pertronix module) out.

If you no longer have the instructions, google the coil's details or look up the Pertronix website.

I ran a Pertronics for years, and just recently helped a friend install his....it is designed with or without the resistor wire and does indeed work either way. (I run the full 12v, my friend runs the stock coil wire.....no problems at all).

It will work either way, but you'd get more spark to the combustion chamber with 12v to the coil. The Flame-Thrower coil is designed for 12v. Stock coils are designed for 5-8v, so the points won't fry. On our cars, voltage is reduced via the resistor wire.

You can get 12v from your fuse box,..look for the port that says "IGN" and run a jumper from there to your coil and remove the resistor wire.

Good luck!

Default Thank you

RHD,
I have read the instructions, and like the others have said it appears that either method is acceptable! - Hence the question.

Thanks to everyone, I'll leave it for now and maybe put it to the bottom of the 'to do' list - for when I'm really bored. I already have the IGN line wired in for the Ignitor pick-up so a simple spice is very easy.

Thanks all,

Jeremy.
