Its freakin heavy, I would not do it without the car on jackstands. Then drop the tranny out with a floor jack. Thats Minimum for safety.
Unless your RAEL good on the bench press I wouldn't tryi it without a jack, its awkward and greasy.
Be safe and live to drink the celebratory refreshing beverage
Oh, and remember to put a jackstand under the back of the motor

A four speed weighs maybe 70 lbs or so. I tried using a jack, but ended up kicking it out of the way and just manhandling the tranny out. It can be removed with the front end on jackstands, just be sure to put it up as high as you can get it. I had to remove the shifter and the bellhousing and lift the back of the engine. It was a real pain but it is possible.
I've done both auto and four speeds in the driveway.
Jack it up as high as you can safely go, use jackstands and choc the wheels really well, once you remove the driveshaft only the emergency brake is keeping the car from rolling. And support the engine at the rear of oilpan.
A four speed is easy to get out, lining it up for install is a pain, use a couple of long bolts without heads to help get it in.
An automatic is another story, drain it,because making it a little lighter helps alot and it comes pouring out of the tailshaft when you get it out, use a floorjack to lift/support the tranny, and be careful about the torque converter, it's heavy.
It's hard to get enough clearance to get an auto out from under the car, but lifting the tailshaft helps.
Both are much easier with a helper, but it can be done alone.
Have fun!!
