I'm tired of my outside mirror flopping at every bump and at speeds over 40 mph. I remember the stock mirror floped over at about 90mph when it was new. What to do, replace with the same or get bullet style? Is there a good site to get replacement mirrors that would look correct for the period (1968)? Perhaps chrome bullet? I know you can get both left and right at Eckler/Zip for ~$100.
I also would stick witht he correct factory mirror. I had the same problem with my 68, bought the new mirror and it was nice and tight and I even have the correct date code as Paragon will stamp the date code you ask for.

When mine got loose I decided to try the soak and repair method to fix it. It worked and now it is tight as new. Soak the mirror in a bucket of lacquer thinner overnight and the glass will loosen up. Pull off the glass and peen the rivits to tighten the clamp on the ball . Use some silicone to reattach the mirror to the frame. I was very apprehensive about doing this even though it was posted several times here. It does work.

I replaced a stock mirror on a 66 coupe because it flopped down on bumps w/a $100 ecklers mirror that did the same thing.......
The mirrors are still available at your Chevy dealer....I bought mirrors from Mid America and the Chinese fit was terrible. The GM Restoration Parts mirror is just what the doctor ordered!
I want to install a right side mirror anyway. I guess it wont hurt to try soaking it in laquer thinner before buying new ones. I saw those posts with the procedure a long time ago and never tried it. Easy to do. I have all the stuff already.
I have the "floppy mirror blues" too. Now that GM has them, I will chk out prices. Otherwise, it seems that Paragon carries good quality mirror's according to many on the forum.
Soaking the mirror in laquer thinner worked. I ended up installing shims between the retainer plate and rivets. I just used a small electronics washer I ground in half to a "C" shape and wedged it in. Now it is very tight. A perfect fix. I bet it will hold at 100mph
My 76 has the chrome pedistal mirrors on both sides and I must say, they have never flopped around. Granted, I have never had it up to 100mph, but I have graced 80 to 90 several times, with no movement at all. As best I can tell, they are stock original mirrors. I drove it on a 400 mile round trip Vette cruise last year, (most of which was on interstate 70 - 80mph driving), and never had to re-adjust the mirrors.
