Default Electrical Question

I keep blowing the fuse for the courtesy lights/radio/clock/electrical outlet. It usually happens after I accelerate or maneuver hard, but last night the fuse blew shortly after I started the car up. I’ve capped off a few more wires behind the center console and cannot seem to find the short. Where might I check next? It’s a ’69 and thanks a bunch for any and all suggestions – this is driving me nuts.

Are you using the right size fuse. Also double check your cap offs it does not take much to blow a fuse.

Start with power wire coming off the courtesy light fuse; orange I think, and trace it looking for wire insulation damage. Should be able to trace wires to courtesy lights and the delay timer. Sounds to me like a portion of the hot wire swinging into contact with ground. Also check condition of courtesy light sockets.

Do you have more than one fuse location blowing?

Also, have you done any recent work under the dash and if so, what??

had exactly the same problem in my 70. it turned out to be the left hand courtesy light socket. when i but the bulb into the socket it pushed the center contact over and made contact with the side terminal.

Thanks a bunch, guys! I am using the correct 25A fuse. It is the only one blowing. I do remember a while ago that when that wire wiggled too much, the light would go out. I will take the driver's side bulb out and see if that fixes the problem. If not, I will trace the orange wire from the fuse panel. Also, I don't think there is a delay timer, which should make it that much easier to find. Thanks again.

It appears to have something to do with the orange and yellow wires coming out of the fuse box. I’m not there yet, but I’m close. The yellow wire and the orange wire appear to be joined by a plastic piece in 2 or 3 places. Is this a likely place for the short? The fuse still blew with the left bulb out, but it was worth a shot.

I unplugged the left courtesy light from the fuse box, and the short is gone, so I think the short is in one of the plastic connectors where the orange and yellow wires join. Anybody out there have this one happen?
