The 77 bezel has small plastic "wings" on the side to interface with the 68-77 style dash side panels. It's not hard to cut some textured ABS plastic to epoxy in place so that a 78-82 bezel can be used on a 77.

The '78 I worked on had a bezel exactly the same as my '77. Do you think it was a mid year change in '78?

The 77 bezel is a one-year part, #8989948. 78-82 (with clock) is #25017278. A 78-82 bezel will fit in a 77, but will have a gap on each side between the bezel and the knee pad. I doubt a 77 bezel would fit in a 78-82, the side walls would interfere with the dash. It looks the same from the front.
Here's a pic of a 78-81 bezel sitting on top of my original 77 bezel. You can see the wings next to the radio on the 77 part.
Changed to the later cluster awhile back replacing the clock w/ the later oil temp. gauge though it fit in the 77 cluster. This makes the gauge openings same.
