If you have the patience & perseverence to rebuild an engine from this:
And turn it into this:
I don't think there is anything you can't fix on a vette. Except maybe the vacuum headlights and wiper door. Those are cursed by Zora's ghost and can never be repaired.
Maybe a 6. I've assembled engines, installed or replaced just about every component on a car, can tune a car out pretty well and do basic electrical, diagnostic work. The only holes in my skill set is body work that I'd be proud of, and haven't done a complete trans rebuild- auto or manual, and have never done engine machine work (but if I had the machines I'd try it). Oh, haven't done upolstrery very much either.
i'm only a pretty good driver, my only 'art' is to be able to complement my car's speeding attitudes with a proper dose of driving skills and plenty of thoughtlessness...
I would guess I am a 7 to 9 depending on what it is and what day it is. I have done, fixed, worked on and broken just about everything on a car. I even built my 2004R, haven't run it yet!
My welding skills suck, but getting better. Have not done paint and body in a lot of years but am about to get reskilled very soon.
I even fixed my 4L60E on my truck!
The fabrication, ingenuity and skills that I've seen on this forum is very cool. It's just plain artwork. It's also very cool that those "mechanics" choose to help others.
As a mechanic-- I'm a nine.
Mechanic defined as a person who uses hand, power and air tools to work on an auto.
To restore an old, rusted, dry-rotted, incomplete, bubba-fudged car into a safe, street-legal ride takes more than a mechanic. The men and women of this forum are becoming masters of creative auto engineering. The Corvette certainly has it's own unique set of problems to be solved, and you folks on the forum saw me through the last two years wonderfully.

said i was an 8 but going to revise that. Count me a 7 cause of my left hand point finger...its a bit crooked now after sticking it in a BBC fan 25 years ago. But hey, did i ever learn that leson!

I would give myself a solid 5. Anything mechanical, interior, electrical, brakes, shocks, springs, pulling a motor trans or rear end etc... I will tear into it..and If I don't have the tool...I'll buy it. Have not built anything driveline related and don't have deep knowledge on it... but have torn plenty of cars apart...and I even get them back together without too many left over parts.
Any body/paint work...I want nothing to do with it. No desire I guess. I'm more into tearing something apart and rebuilding it. I do want to do a motor eventually. Finding time is tough though...
As mentioned...some of you guys are such help on a car that is not like others!!
Thanks for all of you that help and have no problem doing it.
There isn't anything I won't tackle on a car as far as repairing or rebuilding, front to back. Not much of a painter or body man, that is best left up to the pros. I always say,if you don't know how, someone on this forum will guide you through it. I have been an airline mechanic for thirty five years so I guess I can claim to have average mechanical ability. However, humility won't allow me to rate myself.
I would have to say a 9+. Been a car freak since age 3, was pulling Ferrari 308 motors and Rat motored Vettes apart at age 14, only time I take a vehicle to a garage is when the wife says "I need it now!! for work!, then she pays the $300. to change valve cover gaskets
Have worked on everything from Kenworths to Ferrari's and love em all
