Default Re: HEI Distributor question

I have a "72" 454, my mechanic say's the original distributor is shot and should be replaced with a HEI distributor. So far, I am leaning towards
the Mallory series 75 (I need the tach drive). But, I've noticed there are different drive gear options when ordering depending on the cam. The engine doesn't seem to have a stock cam and I really don't know what it is, nor do I have any way to find out.

Anyone run into this? Is there a "safe bet" as far as ordering the distributor? Or am I worrying about nothing..

I am not sure about a safe bet... You might already know this through research that you can be an HEI with a tach drive... However, I am not sure if you would be able to swap the gears out of it incase they strip...

What you might be able to due is buy the stock replacement and buy a points elimanator kit(I believe Mid America sells them)... Or see if you can put that kit in depending how bad your distributor is. I don't know what the mechanic means by shot.

There is nothing wrong with distributors that are not the HEI. The older Distributors handled more HP than those HEIs from the factory ever thought about when you compare an L88 around 560 or more HP and an L82 with about 200 HP.

The L71 and L88 engines came from the factory with the RPO K66 transistorized ignition system...not points.

Whatever distributor you buy, just make sure it's tach drive.
