well its not a kit but you can buy every thing you need from ecklers and other sources. cost around $3500 or so in parts and a lot of body work skills. have at it!!!!!!!!!
personally i do not care, i am just saying being in the manufacturing business, i can tell you this would cost a lot of money, probably a lot more than any company would want to invest in a project like this.
being the owner of a rubber bumper car, i like the rubber bumpers. Also chrome bumper guys need to stop bitching; people can do whatever they want to their car, because last time i checked they were the holder of the pink slip, not you.... you dont have to like it, agree with it, support it, but you do have to suck it up and deal with it. He isnt going to come over to your house and pull the fenders off your car, he is thinking of converting a car, and it will always look like a car that has been converted, wont hurt the chrome bumpers in the least, and if thats cool with him, than thats cool with me,
Peace
Thanks for starting this thread and to all those that kept their comments on the positive.
Before this thread I thought I would like a chrome bumper conversion on my 78 but no more. I also thought about a ZR rear bumper cover when I have my car repainted next fall but after viewing the posted pics of the ZR bumper.........."no thanks" to both the ZR rear bumper or the chrome conversion. I like my 78 just the way it is.....well, maybe a PC spoiler.\
It could be done - would be a little more difficult on the 80-82's, but for a 73-79 I don't see why not. Look at the two side by side, it wouldn't be hard to fab something up if you knew what you were doing. The "tough sell" though would be the fact that you would need to either be an experienced fiberglass guy, or be willing to hire one, because it would have to be glassed in to look right. Although wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy the Ecklers one-piece front and rears for a 68-72 and just redrill the holes where the body mounts go?
It sounds like a neat idea in theory, but after seeing some of the pics posted I can't imagine why anyone would want to do it ... just looks wrong.
Nobody who owns a chrome bumper is going to be happy about a kit that converts a cheap rubber bumper into a chromie lookalike.... personally I think it would look silly with the rear bubble window so that only leaves the 74-77 models or you cut the rear deck off a 78-82 and replace that as well....
IMO it can be done but it's going to be too expensive .... it's easier to use a junked 68-72 body, fix that and swap that on a later (or custom) frame...
Cost aside: buy a 70's rear panel from Vanacor and try to make that fit a later style body... not sure how good of a fit it is but it's fiberglass so you can make it fit.
Now aren't you funny - Cheap rubber bumper? As far as I am concerned the only C3 vette I'd buy would be exactly what I bought - an 81 manual - the style finally matured at the end - I'm sure if chevy could have met the federal crash standards with a antiquated chrome bumper system they would have. But they couldn't our wouldn't invest in the time or effort to do it.
Why would I want to take my long dropped front end and change it for a high standing chrome Bumper vette?
I know the value of my vette and it isn't some $8K daily driver. Besides the VALUE is what "I think it is" not what the Chrome Bumper snobs say it is.
My head hurts too....I offered a chrome bumper conversion kit about 10 posts ago and I have not had 1 single order. Looks like I'd better get back to my muffler bearing project.
Hey Palamesa, did you ever finish the muffler bearing project? I need a new set myself. What color are the ones you're making? My Brother-in-Law told me the blue ones are the best. If you're making high-quality blue ones, please post a price. Thanks.
The funniest thing about this blast from the past is that in the beginning of the thread, the OP was bemoaning the fact that chrome bumper cars are $25,000 cars and his rubber bumper car is a $15,000 car and he can't afford the $10,000 difference. All he had to do was wait 2.5 years, because there are lots of decent condtion '72 coupes available right now for $15,000.
I'm just not particularly wild about trying to make a silk purse ouf a sow's ear. OK, that's not quite fair, and it's not exactly what I mean, but it's a great saying.
The guys who put 427 badges on 350's, or big block hoods on small block cars, or one of my pet peeves, the beautiful iconic 1967 stinger on a 1964, or the more recent poseur move of installing Z06 wheels and badges on a regular C6 (or worse yet, ZR1 stuff).
What's the objective? To "fool" people, what's that all about?
Guys just shouldn't be so vain. If it's a '78, so be it, don't try to put a bunch of "make-up" on it.
I wonder what happened to the originator of this thread. He seemed very ambitious about his chrome bumper conversion project, but has not been on the forum for over a year.
