Default speedometer gear

I pulled the gear out of the transmission tail piece to go pick up a new one. It is a natural color with 19 teeth. Well, I thought I was all set to pick one up and looked in the parts book to confirm what I had and now I have a problem. I have an automatic and all the gears for them range from 34-45 teeth. The 19 teeth gear is for a manual transmission. How can I figure what gear I need? The gear that is still in the tail piece is orange, I don't know if that might help determine what I need or not. The car is a 1980 but I don't know what gear ratio the rear end is, how do I determine that?

Also, shouldn't there be oil in the tail piece? Mine is bone dry!

Thanks for any help

My chart shows only one axle ratio 3.07. The gear you have is correct per the chart 19 teeth natural color.

Thanks for the info Duke. Does it make a difference whether it is an automatic or manual transmission?

Shouldn't there be oil in the tail piece?

Can't wait to see how fast I'm going, although I'll probably bury the needle since it only goes to 85 mph.

I have a 1980 and had a 307 rear end. I switched the rear gears to 373s.Now the speedometer was reading 2 fast.I switched to a red gear,22 teeth. This slowed the speedo down, now its accurate up to about 40mph.Its still reading about 5 to 7 mph fast over 45mph.Hope this helps

Yes, the gears are different between auto and manual. The book I have didn't show a manual trannie in 1980 but if it did I assume it would be that same as 79', so here is the 79' 4 speed gear chart. I'm not sure about oil in he tail piece as I have only worked on 4 speeds. I would think the tail shaft bushing needs lube of some kind. Any auto trannie guys out there?
