Don't really know where to go for specifics on the L-88 like this so I'd

Actually I've done that and they all say "You must be kidding"
Remember I said L-88, not your standard fare.

If you are looking for an orig cap, it should look like this with these markings.......................

This example is a repro, but I have gotten 6 orig's off of ebay, they are out there. Now, an L88 I have been told is not black in color like most applications, it will have a brownish look to it. I have 2 of those also. Hope this helps.......................B

Yup....only difference is the color between an L88 and a std chevy distributor cap.

Do you want one for a restoration or to drive the car? If you want a restoration part, try the NCRS site for good sources. If you just want to drive the car, the standard points-type GM V-8 cap should work.

The different color cap may not specific to the L88. It may be specific to the K66 transistorized ignition that came standard on the L88, L89 and L71 engines. That ignition was optional across the line, but uncommon outside of those engines it came standard on.

My '69 has the L71 engine and I run a high quality distributor cap with the window that fits all GM V8 distributors and it works absolutely fine.

If you want to be perfect for judging, get the brown L88 cap...otherwise it doesn't matter.

Wasn't the brown cap made of that "bakelite" material? I believe that's the name.
