I have to move my original small block from my sister's house when they move later this month and the engine stand it is on is old, doesn't roll well, etc. I figure like everything else, there is good, better, and best. Could some of you recommend a nice engine stand or tell me which ones I should avoid?
I'm looking for one that is not a dolly, but with the engine off the floor so that I can rebuild it.

I have my LS1 on a stand that folds up in the middle. It has 5 wheels on it and it came from Northern Tool or Harbor Freight. Very sturdy and should hold up for years. I am not sure if I have any pics of it at this point but I can snap a few tomorrow. Actually it belongs to TNBUSA, but he is letting me borrow it till the LS drop.
This was as close as I could come to the stand I have. It is very easy roll. Engine Stand.
I have used the A/C Delco brand available at your local auto parts store for about $30. I even had my complete big block on it, that was alittle scary but a smallblock is no problem

Mine is the 3 wheel from Harbor Freight. Used it for both big and small blocks. I agree with the stability issue. Can't take the corners as fast with the big block. But then don't race aroung the garage with it either.
I have 3 that are similar to the one Eddie linked to except mine don't fold up. I got 'em at Harbor Freight for $70 when they were on sale last time. They're plenty heavy duty and handle well. The only problem is that the legs splay out too far - it won't go far enough between the legs of the shop crane to make it easy to get the engine on and off the stand. It can still be done, just gotta take your time and work with it. I would never buy one of the 3-wheelers, I've seen a couple tip over and that's not a pretty sight. I have an old very heavy duty one but I only use it for core engine tear downs. Still gotta be much more careful than with the 4-wheeled type.

you will buy one of these and have it for a long time......buy a fold up one that has a wide stance......not one that has one center leg...go for one that has 1250- 1500lb capacity
I bought a four wheel stand from Harbor Freight that has worked well for my BB. The only drawback with Harbor Freight is that you are sending more American $ to China. Stay away from the three wheeled versions as they are not very stable especially when you rotate the engine on the stand. I'll sell you mine for half price of you want to pick it up in Waco TX.
Also, check out the dolly brackets that bolt directly to the motor mount area from Jegs. Pretty cool for rolling around an assembled engine and trans.
