Nutseynut -

Where are the cracking speakers located?

You need nice speakers and you need an amp to run them.

That cracking is a couple of things. Maybe the speaker is getting frequencies it's not designed to handle. Also, the head units is working to hard to move the cones back and forth and the cracking might be clipping.

Either way, new speakers will not solve the issue, nor will location. A new head unit would be first in line, but the RMS watts per line won't improve a whole lot. It'll be better though.

On top of that, you could mount a small 2 channel amp, a nice set of coax or component speakers, and really enjoy the sounds heard with that setup.

4x6s or 5.25s will fit in the kicks. If you are running a factory radio, I would just buy the lowest end replacement speakers from a decent company, like pioneer. None of them are going to sound good anyway when the volume is turned up. I had 5.25s pioneers, I installed brand new, running them off of a cd player and after a month I pulled them out, installed a good componet set of 5.25s with an amp and a sub woofer. Thats the only way you get any decent sound out of these things.

4x10s will mount behind the kick panels. Stock location for the 68 and 69 models.

I just removed my speakers from my kick panels, Bubba did a shiyt job.
Sounds much better with just the rears speakers Bubba also installed.
They were 6 x 3.5 Radio Shack ones. .....probably garbage.
