Default Ignition Sheild - Can be removed?

Hey guys, basic question on the importance of the Ignition Sheild that wraps the Distributer and Wires on my '81, are there any Pros / Cons on removing it for a little better look, I am not really fond of the plastic wrap around. Any insight to the importance of it would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

The reason it's there (and the metal foil on the inside of it) is to eliminate ignition noise in your radio...particularly the AM. Fiberglass bodies have no natural filtering ability like a metal car. If you remove it, the car won't run a bit different...you may experience radio noise...that's all.

If you've already replaced the original radio with a modern one, it may have sufficient filters built in, but you won't know until you try.

Thats what I thought, just wanted to be sure and you never know. Custom tunes and noise suppressors inle, so no worries there.
Thanks again

its a HIGH piched ring, it growes as your RPM grows, you cant even drownd it out with engine noise, it just keeps getting louder as your radio is being drowed out

Just personal opinion, but I think removing the cover and exposing the ugly wires and cap is far more unattractive. Replacing them with bright-colored custom wires is even tackier (tacky-er?).

Anyway, when I had modified '80 and '81s, I opted for that chrome-look wrap that screwed on over the stock black cover. (ChromeCo, + everyone else has them). It keeps the noise suppression in place, looks a little nicer and doesn't expose wires everywhere.

Just a thought. I could post a picture.

i like that hardcore-everything exposed look, the only thing chrome in my engine is the filter cover and the valve covers (aftermarket) actually i took those "tubes" off last weekend that cover the wires going to the distributor

You can always try removing the shielding & see if it affects radio noise. I didn't have any radio noise when I removed mine. The type of spark plug & ignition wiring probably also affects noise. However, I didn't have any noise with the OEM wiring. Most plugs are resistor type so you should be O.K. there. Now I'm running non-resistor plugs & still no noise. If you get noise, make sure you're using resistor plugs & try an aftermarket spiral wound ignition wire such as Moroso or MSD & I'm sure there are others.

I took mine off the 81 without any problems. Even the old 10+ year radio didn't have any problems with it!!

for some reason i think the radio noise is worse with a point distributor

that could b completely wrong, but mine is bad without the cover, so i just got loud exaust, and now i enjoy that sound and not the radio

Curious, How did you re-route or fasten the hood cable that stretches over the top of the sheilding? Did you cut, shorten and refasten to the firewall or leave as-is and let droop down?
Thanks!

Mine is just left as is, it just kind of hangs there.
