Default Chasing timing gremlin.....I found him!!!

I've been trying to find out why my timing was irratic, backfiring, and a carb fire......

ALWAYS CARRY A FIRE EXTINGUISHER!!!! I could have been in some deep doo doo if I didn't put out the fire real quick.

Well, I thought I had bad wires or a bad distributor or my timing marker is wrong, or the balancer slipped, all kinds a stuff. So I take the car out one more time around the block....sputter, pop, no power after 3k...I pull into the garage and this time leave the car running and pop the hood. I'm just looking at a block of metal that's gonna drive me crazy and I see it.....It's a light show!!!!

I don't know if I damaged the plug or what but spark was jumping from the boot outside the porcelain and to the head. Then if I revved the engine, it went away.

Well I hope this was the problem. I'll reset my timing and try again today..

Yeah just a very mild rough idle. I thought that was just a timing issue. I have a feeling the juice was getting to the tip of the plug like every third fire.

Also, Car is running great. It's smooth throughout the rpm up to 3500. I'm not taking it any higher than that. I know I could get it dialed in more, but I'll wait till I get a new distributor

Wow thats interesting. Did it start when you swapped plugs or just developed slowly?

I would think this would be more of a issue at idle and low rpm. seems the faster the motor reved, the less likely to feel it.

This was a fresh engine and frame restoration. I bet I damaged the plug somewhere along the way and never noticed it. What's funny is druring initial break in the engine was smooth as butter. So the plug problem must have been after I put the body back on the car.

At idle it was running terrible, but rev it up and it's ok whiled parked. Then when I would put a load on the engine it would sputter and backfire....It was drivin me insane.
