just put in a autometer temperature gauge, and the temperature is reading 218. My original unit was reading 190. Any idea's why there is such a difference. Is this to hot?

Sorry I could not resist!
I cannot explain the difference in temp but you might want to chec the sending unit. I replaced mine and it dropped the temp bac to a normal range.

218 won't hurt for a little while, but unless something else changed, that's probably an incorrect reading. If you just replaced the gauge and there is a 30 degree difference, it's probably because the gauge isn't calibrated for use with your sensor.
Its still not completely accurate using a temp gun either because it measures surface temps, not water temps. You can get MANY different readings when testing with the IR gun. I bought one last week for this very use and I was getting varying temps. Anywhere from 240* to 180* depending on where I measured. Even measuring the factory temp gauge sending unit in the head read 240*. The thermostat housing was the closest to accurate temps but it was still off.
I ended up buying a good mechanical water temp gauge, I hid the gauge behind my console radio access plates. Then if I need to see it, I can just pull it out as its not mounted and the cord is long. I can pull it all the way to the seat if I need to. I really just wanted it to compare to my factory gauge. At the low temps, my factory gauge reads WAY colder then the mechanical. At regular operating temps(180-190) they are about 5* apart(oem gauge reads cooler), but at higher temps, like 205-210*, the factory gauge is 10-15* colder as suspected.
