Sounds like an opportunity to install headers and side pipes!

Im a dog person myself so I say get rid of the cats.
Some states will require, at least, a visual that a cat is still in place.

You can get high flow replacement cats, they will keep the car legal, and improve performance..........Its how I am going to do dual exhaust on my '75.

I did the high flow cats on my 79 w/headers & true 2.5 dual exhaust. Just removed the cats & installed an H pipe & QQ plates. no more state inspection. I smashed one of the cats but the other is like new. PM me if you want it.

Make sure to sell it when you remove it. They are worth quite a bit of money recycled. At least $80.

I took it off my '80 five years ago and went with a true dual system. I love it, but now I'm thinking of getting side pipes.

Just in case many forget or are too young, when cats were first put on cars in the mid-seventies, it was due to 'global cooling'!! Scientists opinions change, laws don't!

Actually, they were first put on the California cars in 75. Gov Brown had a relative that invented it. At least that was the rumor back then.

Cats were one of the best things to come around in the automotive industry. It allowed the industry to go back to running a dirtier engine and cleaning up the exhaust. It also pushed the development of computer controlled systems which has greatly improved comfort, performance and reliability.

As a mechanic, fresh out of school in the early 70's I used to laugh at people who would pull off everything that had a vacuum hose connected to it. Most of that stuff was there just to make the engine run with all the internal modifications.

Low power is no longer a byproduct of cleaner running engines.
