Default 82 body removal

I decided to repaint my frame and redo all of the suspension parts. It seems this little project is becoming quite large.! Now I am considering taking the body off for better access to the frame. I have tried to loosen bolts 3 & 4 on the drivers side and they just spin. Investigating this a little I don't think that there are any nuts to remove. Any sugestions to removing these bolts? Also is the underside of the body supposed to be painted black or the color of the body? Any help would be appreciated.

My advice is to leave the body on the frame. Pulling the body is a MAJOR undertaking. If you're dead set on doing it, I would purchase Noland Adam's How To video and three or four of the restoration books and take a look at what's involved.

Underside probably has black undercoating on it. Your floor pans are steel.

No reason to pull the body if you don't have to, its a PITA and SOMETHING expensive WILL break. Get the underside pressure washed on a rack so its squeeky clean and then use the undercoating you like best.
I would recommend POR15, Rustbullit or PBS coatings produce to but Lizard Skin seems to be a nice product for the floor pans top and bottom.
Add in a layer of Nuprene or Dynamat inside and it should even stay cool(er).

If you want some insight into body off, check out member post by Kortensi, (look in General) called "follow along as I ..."

Excellent photo's and detail. If you still want a body off, it will help you!!

Oh, by the way, 3 and 4 do have nuts enclosed in cages.

Number 4, as a last resort, could be remove with a Sawzall; Number 3, beats me Maynard.

Default Body Removal

I guess you can call me hard headed. By the time I removed all of the body bolts, I said what the heck. The body is off & the frame is out from under the body. With a few friends help it took about 1 hour. Putting it back on might be a different story. Now I have full access to the frame to do it right. Cleaning it up with a wire brush on a side grinder will be alot easier. I will replace all bushings on the frame. along with ball joints & everything else. Hopefully I can put this puzzle back together.

Thanks for all of the comments. I will keep you posted.

someone had a checklist to do before putting the body back on. one thing I remember and had done on mine is make sure the rear shock bolts are installed from the outside. you will never get them out with the body on if installed the wrong way. the hardest part is getting the shims on the mounts right and to stay in place. good luck
