Any suggestions?? 72 454 w/ a new edelbrock water pump about 1 year ago. Took car around the block and when I returned coolant was running out of the overflow hose. I checked the hoses and the hose from the radiator to the thermostat was very hard to squeeze. I opened the radiator cap to release some pressure and coolant shot out. I removed the thermostat, thinking it was not opening and put the housing back on. Started it up, ran it and the same thing happened. I turned on the heater and I have hot air. Any help would be greatly appreciated as to what might be the problem.
Thank You!
Mark
It's hard to say. You may have an air pocket in the system now that you pulled the t-stat, but that wouldn't explain your initial problem. It's pretty doubtful that your new water pump crapped out. Have you been messing with the timing lately?
Sounds like you overfilled the system. There needs to be enough room to allow expansion of the fluid while it is hot and under pressure. I leave mine about 6" from the top since it too was leaking out. Now, I don't have a problem and the car stays within operating temperature.
Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot. The radiator cap allows the boiling point of the radiator fluid to be raised approximately 3 degrees for every pound of pressure. A 15 pound cap will raise the boiling point by 45 degrees. When you opened the cap and released the pressure, the boiling point drop and you had the fluid escaping out of the radiator. I am surprised you didn't get a scalding burn from it.
Put the thermostat back and and lower the amount of fluid. Take short rides and see if it stays within operating temp and does not leak.
