The other night we were going on a cruise run, and the headlights went bright then out altogether. I thought it must be a relay failure, then I realized i had relays on both high and low beam.
Turns out I blew all 4 lamps. Sent it to the auto electrician, he found that it was a faulty alternator voltage control unit, replaced the bulbs and the voltage control unit so alls sweet.
Thought I would post this in case it happened to anyone else.
Yep, that can happen. Did he or you also check the battery connections? If the battery connection or the fuse link that feeds the circuit that the alternator #2 pin is connected to is intermittant or opens up, the alternator will go to full voltage, which is what yours did.

Yep, the fuse link had gone as well, battery connection were ok, it's scary when you suddenly encounter total darkness, as it was for us as we live in a rural area.
