Default Engine Numbers, Simple questions.

I am not much of a technical gear head when it comes to numbers and specifics.

Here is what I was told about the current engine in the vette.
"The casting number is 3970010 and the engine suffix is ML07800."

What exactly does this mean?

It is a GM crate motor.

Another thing I have been trying to figure out. L82 models had 290 hp, right? On my center console there is a little, I don't know what you would call it, but it's right under the shifter and the a/c controls. It says, 350 Cubic Inches, 285 LBS FT. TORQUE, 9.0:1 COMP RATIO. The last refers to the rear end gears, correct? My only question is it says 285 Torque. I always though horse power and torque were generally the same. Why would the numbers be different? I know those numbers refer to the original engine and not the current one, which is why I am hoping some one can help me further identify the current engine.

I know it's some pretty basic stuff, but I am just learning and a bit turned around at the moment.

It means your block has 4 bolt mains to start with. It was in numerous applications (from cars to trucks).

Nope. The highest year output was 73 with 250.

Nope, the compression ratio refers to the engine. Higher the ratio, more power (generally). link

Horsepower doesn't equal torque directly, though they are related.
Horsepower = (torque*RPM)/5252
So at 5252 rpm, the horsepower will equal the torque, but only at that spot.
Hopefully someone else can give you more info on the block.

I have to disagree 010 blocks came in 2 or 4 bolt mains.

That's true, but it seems that there's a majority of them out there that have 4 bolt mains (or maybe that's the general perception).

Default Casting Number 3970010

If you find this casting in a 1969 it almost certainly is a four bolt main block. However this casting was used for over ten years and some were four bolt, some were two bolt. Mine was a two bolt block.

Rear end gears! I am sorry I don't know where my brain went.
I do know a little bit, I promise!

Thanks for setting me straight.

Default L-82 H.P. Rating

I believe the L-82 350c.i. engine was rated at 220 (net) h.p.
I don't know for sure about if that number changed for different years...but I know for sure that is the rating for a '77 model.
As far as the L-82 vs L-48...the L-48 reaches its peak h.p. (180) at lower rpms and actually gives more torque at lower rpms than the L-82.
Someone please correct me if I am showing my ignorance...lol

I think the 80' which is the last L-82 was rated @ 230 horse...
