hello, i'm posting this on behalf of my father, he has a 2 tone blue 82, and was looking at possible combo's on what color striping he could use to set odd the 2 colors, here is what he had in mind, now i know its blue painters tape, so kinda bear with me, and obviously not that wide either
without the stripe:
with the stripe:
also any suggestions of different colors are appreciated
go with regular pinstripe, the one with two stripes in it. match either of the two colors then line it up even with the break and let the smaller of the two stripes be on the contrasting color. have done this many times and it looks nice. also go to a parts house that carries 3M products and ask to look at the pinstripes in the catalog. they can order just about any color you need.
When this was done at the factory they just put tape over the edge of the paint at the tape line. The tape was a dual stripe in contrasting colors or the same color flip flopped. Makes it look like two stripes.

I would do a double pinstripe the same color as the dark blue bottom color, just above the deviding color line. I'd use the same space that is in the pinstripe for placement above the dark blue line. It will be nice and simple and look very clean.

/the smaller pinstripe & in the darker color over the lighter color.
Reproduction tape stripes for the two tone models are available from the aftermarket providers. As long as the car has factory colors, I would go with one of the stripe kits. The 82 dealer brochure probably shows the colors of the stripes -- the '81 brochure has them. Score an 82 brochure off eBay.

I too like the red stripe. Here is what a two tone car's stripes looked like from the factory. This is from Phoenix Graphix's website. A kit, including the body and hood stripe is about $270. They became available only about two years ago. I'm tempted to pick a set up just in case I ever need to have mine repainted...
Here is a high res of mine, you can zoom in and see the stripe better.
Thanks. The wheels on mine are the factory 8 slot alum wheels.
Of note, I've got a dealer promo model of an '82, the type made by AMT that a dealer would give you after visiting the showroom...that car is two-tone blue but has the red stripe. I alway's thought it looked good!
