'68 owners, need help with ignition switch removal
I am on the last stage of removing my interior, I got the drivers lower dash pad out, How can I remove the ignition switch from the lower pad assembly so I can plug it back in? I am sending my car in for paint this weekend and the shop wants to be abe to start it so it is easier to move it around. I can get the retaining screw most of the way off, but at the end it seems like something is stopping it from unscrewing all the way, could it possibly be stripped...or is there some kind of safety installed to stop the screw from coming off all the way..thanks in advance for any help
If you look at where the key goes in just to the side you will see a small hole (about the size of a paper clip). Turn the key to "acc" then insert a paper clip in the small hole. It should feel like it is pushing in on a spring. (because it is) The key and tumbler (inner part of switch) can then be pulled out towards you. At that point the retaining screw will be able to turn that last amount and allow easy removal. Reverse the process to reinstall.

Good info! I always wondered what that hole was for...

Bingo. A paperclip will work, but I use a piece of spring wire I came up with from somewhere, possibly the carcass of a dead hood release cable. It's extra stiff and a little longer than a paper clip.

All dash mounted GM ignition cylinders are removed in this manner. Just be sure to disconnect your battery so it won't drain if the ignition cylinder is being removed for a prolonged period.
