Default Rev counter Hell

About a year ago my mech rev counter started screeching, tried lubing down the cable etc, that didn't work and eventually it expired with the needle spinning round at a great rate and eventually falling off. I saw a second hand one on Ebay and bought it, when it arrived I stripped out the drivers side dash pulls the old rev counter and fitted the replacement 4 hours later and the job is done. Except that 3 months later that tach starts screaming again, this time I buy a rebuilt one and when I found the time stripped out the dash took the old rev counter out and replaced it with the rebuilt one, 4 hours later and I fire up teh car sitting at idle the rev counter works like a charm, so I decide to go out for a run to celebrate. As soon as I accelerate the needle jams, I take the car back and have a good look and the needle has jammed on the 2 screws at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock in the centre face!! I am now faced with another strip down to ease the needle forward a fraction, another 4 hours work!!

Sorry about the rant!

Do you have some issues with the drive going to the tach? Worn cable or gears in distributor?

Nope all new 2 years and 4,000 miles ago, I know the new rev counter was working but at some point in the assembly I must have pushed the needle on too hard, hence its jammed on the 2 screws on the face of the tach. I wouldnt mind so much but removing the dash and the tach from the dash is a real PTA!

...try one of these, much more effective and sharp then stock and tells you when to stop when your right foot gets too happy on the throttle

A nice add on, but I like the stock appearance, I've already had a suggestion about drilling a hole in the glass to tweak the needle forward off the screws but....well thats a bit Bubba for me.

Its sounds odd your needle is flicking around so much.To get the needle off the screw have you tried spinning the cable in reverse with your fingers?

Thats a very good idea! I could also try jiggling the cable back and forward to adjust the needle away from the screws, thatprobably wouldnt work with all the gearing etc. but its worth a try.
