The driver's side window on my 79 doesn't want to come back up.
It was working great and then all of a sudden, it doesn't want to come back up. I can hear a click in the motor when I push the button, but that's it. It's like to motor is stuck. The passenger's side window works fine.
Any tips on troubleshooting this problem and/or replacing the window motor?
When my 79 done that it turned out to be a bad motor. But first i tried swapping switches .. no good. Then i unplugged wire from motor and ran a piece of wire from the hot side of battery and touched it to the prong on motor. One prong lifts the window and the other lowers the window. If that doesn't make window go up... bad motor. IMO. Hope this helps. MPV
I had intermittent problems with both of my power windows. In both cases, it turned out to be a loose connector at the motor. I put new connectors on (slide on), cleaned the connection, and made sure they were tight, and I have had no more problems.

If you need a motor check your local parts store, not the catalog people. Replaced both of my motors on my 71 for around $115.00. Bought the motors at Autozone. The motor is a standard GM motor that fits a number of cars over many years. I think the electrical connector was changed around 1975 but the motors included the jumper for either the earlier or later applications. Does not include the drive gear so you will need to use your old one if it is in good shape. Good opportunity to clean up and lubricate the whole window assembly and also the lock and latch assemblies.
More than likely it isn't the motor, but the gear in the window has bound up. The windows ride on tracks powered by a scisssor gear that commonly becomes broken, bound or misaligned. If nobody has messed with it before, the motor and actuator assembly are mounted to the inner door via rivets. I had great success replacing these with bolts and lockwashers during the process of aligning and cleaning the mechanism. It was't fun, but my windows run up and down smoothly and quicky and it didn't cost me anything accept a couple Hail Marys for the language I used. The space is pretty tight.

I think 79L48 has it right mine has the same deal its more than likley the tracks.
It could have been the tracks because once I started to undo the "X part" (for lack of a better description) and moving the window, the motor came unstuck. I've readjusted the window, hopefully the motor won't get stuck again.
