How does the power steering pump pulley come off? I thought it was a big nut till I got the pump out and now I see what looks like an allen key shape in the middle of the shaft/nut. Is it just pressed on? Thanks for any help.
Not just any puller. You must use the one designed for GM pulleys. You will note that there is a groove around the pulley hub on your pulley. The correct puller will slide into that groove and react against the end of the pump driveshaft to draw the pulley off.
The only way to install the pulley is to use the correct installation tool or jury rig your own. You will need to thread a 3/8-16 UNC bolt into the end of the driveshaft. Use a 3/8-16 nut and greased washers to draw down the pulley by reacting against the driveshaft itself. Continue screwing down the nut until the pump hub and the end of the driveshaft are flush.
DO NOT under any circumstances try to press the pulley onto the shaft by just reacting against the pump. You will break things inside the pump.

Hey Jim - Q..... on the reinstallation of the pump, why can't you just torque the pulley down. I understand when you say not to beat on it. But I went to HiLo and AutoZone and neither had a pulley installer that they believed would work. Is this special or do you know of one available. Also - can you clarify for me your concept of a homemade installer? I have read your papers from your website as well.
Oh ! The double sided bolts on the back - do the short ends do into the pump casing? I was looking for torque values as well.
