Finally got done with the primer for the car, just need to do some more wet sanding and getting ready to do that hand paint job that people have been talking about with the rustoleum, its going to be black since I thought I'd stick to a simple color for now. How do you guys think its turning out so far?

Looks good in the pictures, just as long as its completely free from any defects it should turn out fine, did you see lowbucks72 yellow rustoleum paint job, it came out awsome. Good Luck, Peace,,,Moosie
also some advice, i would unbolt everything if you want a real nice job, especially the mirrors and front and rear spoilers. would look more like a pro job, just my .02 worth.
looks good.
Be cafeful of that blue painters tape on your sidepipes. I covered my rear chrome bumpers for a week or so while i painted the insides and lined them up and the tape was a huge PIA to get off. Took me a few hours to peel it all off.

Use rubber cement thinner from any art and craft store. Dissolves the tape glue very quickly.
I would unbolt the sidepipes and pull them off from the headers and then put plastic garbage bags over the collectors and then hold the bags in place with painters tape. Then when your all done just pull off the bags and bolt your sidepipes back onto the car.
Lookin' Good! What grit did you use before the primer? Did you roll it on? My '80 is sitting naked in the driveway. I was thinking about using the Transtar Roll it primer and maybe rolling on their epoxy as well. Any tips would be great!
Ed
I used 120 grit to start out and before I paint it I'm going to move to something much finer. Its also rustoleum clean metal primer in white. I should be painting it this weekend so I will update you guys on how it goes. Haven't figured out yet how much I want to thin it with mineral spirits yet, because I don't want the paint to run to much, but I want it still to be smooth. I was thinking something like a 70/30 mix to be on the safe side
Update to my rustoleum under $100 paint job, got my first couple layers of gloss black on, pics aren't that good cause I just finished and its getting dark out and all, but here it is so far, It looks better in person than in these pics but here is the rough idea what it looks like after a couple coats..

Black is the worst color you could have chosen for a roller paintjob... it shows or magnifies more imperfections than any other color... it does look great on the photos
I'm not concerned about it being show quality or anything, its a daily driver, and I beat on it I think its pretty nice for costing as much as it has
I don't want to warm up the discussion abut what's better, cheaper, takes longer, painful or lasting....roll or spray.... Rustoleum seems to hold up ok if you don't park the car in the southern sun 8hrs/day, every day...
for $100 it's acceptable even if it has a few problem spots.... I do however have to say that my material for a spray paint job was only $800 or so and can be cheaper if you shop online.... that's if you already have or rent a compressor and a gun...
the most important part is that you did it yourself and didn't pay some monkey to screw it all up
I'm happy with it I guess thats all that matters...and it felt good to do it. I'm probably not going to replace all the emblems with the stock ones either, I want to put chrome flames for the side emblems, a chrome skull for the gas tank, and haven't decided what to put for the front yet, only thing I actually want to replace is the red L-82 decals on the hood
Love that black with red interior look! What do you do next? Watching closely for update! Isn't it nice when you see the final product of your own hard work? Ed
Next I have to use really fine sandpaper once the paint is dry to get any bumps that are left out, wipe it all down with denatured alcohol, and put maybe 2 or 3 more layers of paint on it, then start working the paint on the inside of the doors and sill, and in the engine bay, and get some new emblems for the outside and the final thing I will do is repaint my sidepipes with high temp paint. I'll probably eventually put a top coat or something on it just to make it shine even more...I will be updating again with more pics in a day or two
Maybe you can get even better esults if you use clearcoat..... just wodering..... maybe a good idea, maybe a brainfart... they sell clear rustoleum, don't they ???
