After a year and half resto I took the first drive today, everything went great until I burned my leg on the sidepipe, it will leave a nice scar. Boy does this hurt, definitly lesson learned.

I feel your pain!! done it myself, that's why I bought heat shields.
Lots of people I know have the 'Side Pipe Tattoo' and they do sting. I have been lucky enough to never burn myself on my own car so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Ha I've had sidepipes for well over a year and drive my vette every day. To this day, no one has once gotten burnt on them. But that's probably because my sidepipes are below the frame so unless you step UNDER the car, you can't burn yourself on them. Plus the glasspacks really don't get that hot... now the chrome tip... That thing gets scorching.
I mainly used to have problems with people getting their ankles chewed up on my U-bolt clamps.
Get yourself a pocket notepad and put in the vette, then everytime someones burns themselves on the sidepipes write it down and keep a running 'I told you so' log.
I've driven mine 2 days so far and no burns yet, I am very cautious getting in and out of the car after it has warmed up. The look, sound and difference in performance is amazing. The car really breaths now compared to my old exhaust system.

It won't take many burns to learn to lift your leg... Got lots of old (25 years ago) girlfriends in Myrtle Beach with nice scars on their calves from my 73 with sidepipes...

I've been lucky and not burned my legs in 10 years.....I can't say say that about my wife, she burned her legs once and then went out and bought a Z06. Recently I put on the heat shields and sure like the look...
