Default Alternator Bracket

I just bought headers to replace the cast iron manifolds for my SB 74 Vette. I noticed that the bottom of the alternator is bolted to the manifold. Which bracket do I need to keep the bottom of the alternator secure once the headers are installed?

I don't remember my 77's alternator ever having a bracket that bolted to the back. Just the pivot shackle for the bottom and the big adjusting arm for the top. It probably had something from the factory in back, but I never noticed a problem. My best suggestion - install the headers, bolt the alternator in place tightly with the pivot and the tensioning arm, fire the engine up and see if the alternator stays put when you rev it a bit. If it stays put, I'd say you're probably OK.

The A/C compressor is supposed to have a similar brace. Mine never had one of those, either, and I never noticed anything bad.

It sounds like you have a '71 and earlier style lower bracket on your engine. '66-'71 lower brackets were stamped steel and had an additional rear brace that attached to the exhaust manifold. The '72-'82 lower bracket is cast iron and does not attach to the exhaust manifold and needs no modification for headers.

I guess I will have to wait and see when I get the old manifolds off to see it what I have to work with.

But you are saying that the alternator is not attached directly to the manifold and that their is just a bracket sandwiched in between the two?

That's the kind of bracket I had. It supports the alternator very well, IMHO.

I'm using the same bracket also. The adjustable feature helped when I did the C130 swap
