I remember a post years ago about someone using a video camera with night vision to record an image of the build sheet to be able to see the imprint......
I've done a search, but can't find the thread......I know it sounds like an urban legend, but it may be worth a try....
Just thinking,,, you could try setting it on a different back grounds, White may be best, and maybe even standing up, take pictures up close of the sections you want to decode with a digital camera, then after loading them into the computer, you could enlarge them and see if you can read the code then, you can also adjust the contrast in a photo editor software page, or try a black light, or night vision system.
Many 72's had a second copy of hte build sheet behind the dash between the tach and speedo. You may want to pop-out the couple of phillips screws that hold the wiper switch in place and then look in there with a mirror and flashlight. From the passenger side, if you thin enough arm, you can sometimes reach right in there and feel around. I have found a couple that way.
Mine was in similar shape when I replaced the gas tank about two years ago. I took the sheet to work where I have an overhead projector and I was able to make what was there with the bright light shinning through. Just another thought!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember that also. My 72 build sheet is covered with dust and barely readable. I'm going to try blowing some of the dust off with my compressor and possibly using the night vision on the video camera to see if the print is still visible.
