Default Block Casting Date

Does anyone know where the block casting date is located? I know it on rear of the engine on the passage side; however, I cannot locate it. Do I need to remove the distributor to see it? Is it on the side of the engine, or can I see it by looking straight down where the engine and transmission meet?

It's kind of a PITA to see. It's on the drivers side basically on the top of the block flange where the trans and or bell housing bolts up. Depending on how clean or dirty your motor is makes a difference. A light is definitely needed and maybe an inspection mirror. Seems like there's always something in the way but no need to remove anything.

If it doesn't seem to make sense when you find it, you may be looking at it upside down.

Block casting date codes are uasally found on the top portion of the bellhousing flange at the rear of the block and some small blocks have the date code on the passenger side of the block near the freeze plugs.
No need to remove the distrubtor.

Some of the older big blocks had the date code cast just ahead of the starter on the side of the block (not sure what motor you looking at)...but ,if thats the case try looking there if you can't find it on the bell housing area.
