I have two stock harmonic balancers from 454's. I'm needing to use one on a project. Is there a way to tell which of the two is in better shape other than visual inspection?
also, look at where the timing cover seal rides, you don't want a groove there from the previous timing cover seal.
if one's a heavier weight, that's usually better (i.e. HD vs std duty), assuming that they're both balanced to 454, not 427. I'm not sure if 454 balancers came in different tunes, i.e. truck, passenger, high-perf.
obviously, you don't want stripped threads for the crank pulley mounting bolts.
look for evidence that it's been bubba'd with a prior hammer install.
