Default Starter heat protection?

Anyone know a good heat sheild for on the starter? I took my car to my parents house, 3.5 hr drive, and the starter was fried. I put a new one in but want to protect it a bit. Any ideas?

I've used the generic ones before and they seem to help eliminate heat soak.

Another option. Easier to install and take out than the metal ones

I like the wrap idea, thanks. Does it cause problems with holding heat in at all?

I used a Moroso starter shield on my header equipped Vette. It solved my heat soak problem.

How are the sheild style ones installed? Bolted to what, or clip on?

Thanks

My 73 L82 had the "heat soak" problem. A starter shield (wrap style) from Summit helped except for real hot days. It would take 2 hours of cool down for it to restart after a run. Had the starter rebuilt, installed a few shims during the re-install and never had the problem again. Heat shield is on a shelf in the garage.

I am going to run ceramic coated block hugger headers with thermotec wrapping on the pipe to contain heat so I am not expecting any heat problems with the starter or inside the cabin

My solution was a new GM Performance Parts gear reduction starter, part number 12361146. Problem solved.

I picked up one of the Delco gear reduction starters that were designed for the BB502. Looks like a small version of our stock starter. That fixed my problems.

the are held in place using the existing screws on the starter, you take em out, place the shield on and re install the screws and put it in

Ive got both, but been using the blanket fro about 2 months now since i put my pipes on and no heat soak issues at all

cheers

The Moroso Heat shield is bolted at the front using one of the front starter cover bolts. The back uses one of the solenoid bolts I believe.

Same solution solved my problems. Only problem from ordering the part from Summit is that the handling charge is damn near the price of the part. Free shipping my ***.

I have starter heat issues and and I have both the flexible shield and the metal shield. I tried putting the flex shield on but there is not enough clearance between the starter and engine. Can anyone share pics and/or insrtuction on the installing the metal type.

it's a simple install. it uses 2 bolts on the starter on each side, one is the long bolt of the starter on the front and the other is a small bolt on the back of the starter towards the rear of the car. i've got a 1/4" clearance between the heatshield and my headers and about the same distance between the heatshield and the block on the top of the shield.
