Looks right. If that is the original timing tab and timing chain cover, you will notice from pic that timing mark on balancer will just be visible as it comes around.
If in doubt, do a visual line up with the pulleys for other parts - water pump, ps pump, alternator, etc.
But if balancer feels bottomed out to crankshaft - you are fine.
That is why you use a balancer installer instead of a big ol' hammer!
I bottomed out once when installing a balancer and it wasn't seated properly against the shoulder. I would think there would be less of a gap.
Did you lubricate the snout at all before installing the balancer? I had to pull mine off, lube everything including the threads on the installer, and try again. The following time it slid on all the way and seated properly.
the pulleys didnt line up exactly so i relubed everything and it finally seated more. the pulleys line up now.
on the last turn of the nut, the threads on the adapter to the crank to the installer broke off into the crank threads, but luckily i was able to use needle nose and get it out.
That balancer looks pretty old. Is the rubber ok? This is a good time to replace it. Just curious why you needed to pull the balancer?
i was told it was ok(it seemed fine before too), but i may go ahead and replace it, what happens if i dont and its bad?
i put a new cam in, so i had to pull everything off.
