I haven't found too many choices for a cheap radio to fill the empty hole I have in the dash. Even considered a blank to put in temporarily. Anyone seen a pic of this one? http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...5&dept_id=1029
Shouldn't be any cutting at least. I just need something that will work, I usually won't listen to it anyway.

You can go right to the autosound web site & buy direct from them cut out ecklers.
While I admittedly have no personal experience with Custom Autosound products, I haven't heard much positive about their stuff from people who have bought it. I know unhappy customers are going to be more vocal than satisfied ones, but I have heard a great deal of negative comments.
Depending on your budget, I would buy a modern slide-in FM stereo/CD player with a reproduction bezel cut for it. That's what I did and have been very happy with the results. You can buy a really nice Alpine or similar unit for less than $200. Be prepared to spend for quality speakers as well...a good head unit will demand that or you won't be satisfied with the results.
Do I need the stock amp for a new radio? I assume no, but figured I better check since I don't have it. If not I'll probably do something like this, the price is good. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1761815

Actually the opposite is usually true. Even the best head units available will only realistically put out 17-20 watts RMS per channel. I know most boast up to 25 per channel but it just doesn't happen. I used to do stereo installs for a nice stereo shop and we had an expo and tested most high end units. 17-20 was best average.
Unfortunately that wattage is low by good speaker standards. A good set of speakers will handle an average of 60 - 100 watts RMS, and that's a true number. Those speakers off of a head unit internal amp would sound like poop at high volumes.
Stock car speakers handle a wattage a lot closer to what after market head units put out.
If you want great sound you'll need to amp the speakers and there is just no way around that. A nice head unit, a top notch amp, and a fine set of speakers will set you back around $350 give or take supplies.

Yeah I'd say that's about right price wise for a nice sounding system.
Before I bought my Pioneer I looked at Alpine but was not impressed with the specs for the price.
Of course some people got to spend five time that much to get DVD players and 1000 watt amps and subs ec ec ec.
Well it looks like I'll be going with a non corvette style radio for sure, I just went and looked at the console, PO already cut it out. If I want to listen to a really nice sound system I'll go in the house, the car was meant for driving. Thanks everyone for the input.
