The starter that came off of my BB did not have shims. Do I need them? I've read posts that advise that they disipate heat to the starter as well as shim it up for proper alignment with the flywheel.
The heat thing sounds like a tall tale. However, it's always a good idea to use shims for a good fit. I always start with no shims and have been lucky to not need them in many cases.
