Default Automotive fire extinguishers?

I'm planning to buy a fire ext for my car. Anybody have one in their car? What kind should I get and how large should it be? I've seen those little chrome ones that are pretty cheap but I don't think those would be very effective. Also, where's a good mounting spot in the car? I'd like some ideas on where to mount it. Thanks in advance.

I just bought 3 of the standard ones from Autozone (one for each car) for around $14 each. Its red and a normal under sink kitchen size (like 1 quart'ish). I haven't mounted it yet.

Figured that when the car caught fire coming home from the purchase and neither the vette nor my trailing car had one I should outfit the entire fleet...

I would suggest a halon or halotron fire extinguisher. Halon is a heavy gas in normal atmospheric conditions which removes all oxygen. It leaves NO residue whatsoever and works on almost any type of fire imaginable. Not the easiest stuff to get but a few sites still sell it.

Whoa, guess I havn't looked at fire extinguishers in a while. not as hard to get as I thought. I was remember some time ago when halon was banned or was almost banned for public use because too many people were in boat engine bays when the halon systems went off and people suffocated. Maybe i'm remembering just a certain type of halon. Sorry, I spoke without doing some research, just some old memories popin up.

I've got one mounted on the right rear wheel hump where I can reach it quickly!

I keep three small extinguishers in the garage and bring one along when I take a car out. This way I'm always looking at them to see if they're charged, etc. It would be my luck to have one mounted and find out it's not operational just when I need it most. Plus, keeping them out helps in the event of a garage issue. Dont have to climb in the car and unlatch, etc. MHO.

Using the same one, looks good in the car & best insurance you can buy. I use them in all my old cars and put them in all my customers cars.

I purchased one from vetteworks with mounting bracket. I got the red ABC dry chemical and bracket I think for under $100. Small price for the piece of mind it gives me.

Thanks for the input guys! I found the one I wanna buy. I wasn't sure if mounting it in front of the seat would work because I was afraid it might block the seat from moving forward but now I see some of you mount it there.

It does stop the seat from moving forward. But that really isn't much of an issue in a Vette is is? Back seat passenger doesn't need the additional room. Also, my wife (pretty much the only passenger) doesn't seem to mind the f/e in front of the seat.

Good point.

Nevertheless, I'm gonna mount it some place behind the seats so it's out of the view of would be thieves.

Mine's similar, but I just attached a big velcro strip (hook, not fuzzy) using epoxy to the side. Now it pretty much stays where I put it (on old carpet). Location changes slightly, like when I'm either storing the roof panels or using them, etc. Behind passenger seat, within driver's reach.

However mounted or attached, it's good to have on board. My insurance agent seemed happy to see one too.

I just took advantage of the Speed Direct summer sale and ordered the 2.5lb extinguisher and in front of the passenger seat mount. I read somewhere that an extinguisher mounted behind you becomes a missile in head on and near head on collisions. I don't need that headache.
