Default How do you install the jack spring brackets?

I'm attempting to install new jack spring brackets. I'm not sure how
they are installed as they were missing when I bought the Vette.
The assembly manual shows the rivets positioned with the head end down
(please refer to the pic). I would have thought they should be installed head end up. Should they be up or down?? (please refer to the second pic). Also, how do you crush these rivets when they are in place? Thanks.

They are "Solid Rivets" and as far as I know need to be pounded to grip.
As far as the orientation, I would imagine you would prefer the head facing the interior as this can be seen from inside the box.

Heres a little info.

looks like a two person job.

one person holds the rivet down with a firm object, while the other hammers away from the underside.

anyone attempt this?

Use the AIM method as depicted. If you drive the rivet with the head up, it will exspand in the fiberglass and crack it.

What Chuck and Mike said ... expanding end always in the steel ... flat head on 'glass.
A washer could be used to put in upside down.

Personally, I would use stainless steel pop rivets.

I used the stock rivets on my old car and, after thinking about it for a while, did it this way.

I put a steel plate on a hyraulic jack under the car and lifted it against the round side of the rivets. I climbed in the car and used a center punch and BFH to start it. Then finished beating the rivets flat with a ball pean hammer. Worked fine, just not the neatest job in the world.

If I were to do it again, this is how I would do it.

Same here, if there is enough room for the gun.
It sure would save a lot of aggravation unless its a ncrs car.

Next time instead of rivets, I intend to use small threaded bolts (and washers) with nuts from Lowes or Home Depot. Have done the project with rivets and afterwards thought for that particular location rivets was too much effort.

I installed the brackets yesterday using the crush rivets, and they worked quite well. It wasn't too bad a job. I supported the rivet head (under the car) with a jack (as suggested) , and pounded the other side two or three times with a hammer. Thanks to all who responded.

I would have just used some short stainless screws.
