Due to leaky valve stem seals and bad lifters, I had to rebuild the top end of my engine. My dad and I completed the project yesterday.
Before...
After!
Also reconditioned the air box and put a new rubber seal on it...
My engine compartment has a long way to go, but at least now I'm not embarassed to show it. Oh, and I'm not burning oil a quart a week anymore and the lifters are quit, which is nice.
nice work , you are on your way now. it's harder to do a piece at a time but seeing the big difference should give you the dose of enthusiasm to keep at it.
Give me some pointers on how you did it. I have my valve covers off now, and also would like to freshen up the look of the engine / bay. What did / didn't you remove? What did you use to clean / paint things?
Thanks
Thanks everyone! It was a big job and it feels good to be done.

That came from NAPA. I'll look and see if I can find the part number, it might be on the sticker on the solenoid. We have a NAPA distribution center here in Memphis so we can walk in and get anything they would normally have to order.

We took the manifold and heads off and sent them to a shop, so everything came off of the top of the engine. I used the Duplicolor engine paint from AutoZone. With the valve covers, I cleaned all the crud off of them with gasoline, then sanded them with a fine grit sandpaper until they were really smooth. The duplicolor paint goes on nicely and dries quickly. I plan on painting some of the other exposed engine parts with a brush later. As someone mentioned above, I should have taken the fan out and painted it...will have to do that another day.
On the subject of valve covers, I highly recommend getting a set of the Permadry Plus gaskets from FelPro. I haven't had any leaks since I switched to them a coule of months ago.

OK...NAPA.....I probably haven't checked there. NAPA is pretty good at some of the stuff that autozombie "can't get".
They are great people there. They're a few miles up the road from here. Super friendly and know me by name. Very vette knowledgeable too. Helps that the guy (the one I deal with anyway) has a vette too. Engine looks good! Keep up the good work!
