I have a lead on a 2 year old 700r4 that's never been in a vehicle bolted up to a rebuilt 350 also 2 years old. The price is $1000. The story is they guy shelled the transmission so he bought a new replacement transmission and pulled the motor to rebuild it and they never got put back in the car. They are from a 93 chevy pickup. I'm not so interested in the motor as much as the transmission. Does it sound worth it ?
edited to add what are the steps to identifying it as a 700r4? Any help would be appreciated.
Yes it's 1K for both. I have yet to see them for all I know they could look like they've been buried in a lake for 40 years. I just hope it's not one of those too good to be true stories. Thanks for the help.
would it still be a good deal if it's the wrong tail shaft? Sorry for the ignorant questions, I know next to nothing about transmissions. Thanks for the help.
From: Arlington Va Current ride 04 vert, previous vettes: 69 vert, 77 resto mod
the tail shaft sets up where the mounting point is and where the speedo cable fits in.....i believe there are many different types of tail shaft configurations.....i do not know what they cost to change them or what is involved with it.....www.700r4.com is a great website and company i got all of my supporting parts from them perhaps they can help you out
If you use a BowTie crossmember the tailhousing doesn't matter because they use the mounting holes just behind the pan on the main case (C4 Corvette cases are not drilled and tapped here). If you want to make your own crossmember you can get an 82 style C3 tailhousing that has a mounting pad on it from Phoenix something-or-other for around $75.
i appreciate the help. I'm going to look at the motor and tranny around 5:30 this evening. If it's what he says it is I'll by it. I'm half tempted to buy some of it it even if it's not all he says. Thanks again Ryan
Well turns out the guy was full of it. I got there and the transmission were nearly unidentifiable due to the oil and grime. I asked the guy why he told me it was a brand new transmission, his reply was well my brother and me put a new part in it, it runs kinda ok.
I then asked what all he did when he "rebuilt" the motor. His reply I replaced the head gaskets. I said that's it? He said yeah that's all you have to do to rebuild a motor. Thanks anyway dude I'll just put that money to rebuilding the transmission I have.
I do appreciate the help I received in this thread.
Yeah I know but I would never known if I didn't go check it out. Didn't waste any money going to look. That phrase was the first thing I uttered when he told me about it.
