Default Interior Mildew Removal

I have a 69 convertible that has been in my detached insulated garage this summer. It appears that the humidity here in Maine rose so high that mildew is growing on some of the black upholstery, leather and door panels. Does anybody know how to remove/kill the mildew? I'm afraid to use bleach since it may fade and/or weaken the material.... Any help would be appreciated....

Is it real leather or vinyl? Lysol will do the trick on vinyl for sure. It *should* be OK on leather, maybe you could test somewhere where the color won't be noticed to be sure.

Thanks, only the steering wheel cover is leather.. everything else is vinyl.

Have you actually tried using Lysol for this?

Yeah, actually it was a guy from Service Masters who told me about that (they're one of those places that comes and cleans and disinfects and all that if your house floods).

I always try to avoid the rain but I got caught in it once and (of course) the t-tops leak and some of the water ran under the seat. Long story short, I don't drive it much and it sat in a dark garage for a couple weeks before I took it out again and mildew had set in the carpet and you could smell it next time I got in. Unbolted the seat and lysol'd the crap out of the carpet, and also wiped down the door panels and dash and everything else just in case. Took care of it no problem.

First, you need to control the humidity in there. A $200 dehumidifier is a cheap way to protect your investment.
Now, dealing with what's there. Wipe and vacuum away all that you see. Place Bounce sheets under the seats and under the top area. This will help prevent future growth and assist with the odor, as long as you keep the level relatively low.
Now, go to Lowe's today and get that dehumidifier!

Mid-America sells big bags of dessicant...when they absorb too much moisture, you just chuck them in the oven for a while to dry out, then put them back in the car. Works great.

Thanks, guys.... yeah, the first thing I did was to put a dehumidifier in there.... the next thing I did was to post my question.... Until now I've always lived in dry climates .... I didn't think about the humidity when I finished off the garage this summer and put the car in it.... Live and learn!

thanks for the feedback!!
