Manual or auto?
My manual shifter didn't have it when I purchased the car and it rattled like death on the highway. Picked one up from one of the vendors for a few bucks. Much better now.
My shaft is solid though, now way for it to fall down into it.

Its a manual. I took the center console apart to remove carpeting and to clean underneath and took the shifter ball off along with metal rod and spring. It was working fine before I did this. I put the spring back on the thin steel rod that runs down into shifter and now the T handle no longer springs back because the spring fell down into the shaft. How can I get the spring out of shaft? Once I do this, how do I prevent?
You know now that the spring goes on top. Use a piece of stiff wire with a small hook shape bent on the end and go fishing. It's not that hard to get back out (don't ask me how I know). Just remember when you put it back together drop the t-handle in first, then the spring, then the ****.

I posted once that I felt like a total idiot because I put the spring back on the wrong way and it fell into the hole... and you would be surprised how many guys posted, "been there, done that"
Here ya go, from 2 years ago, titled "sometimes I amaze myself"

I did exactly what you said and I got the spring out.
Initially, I tried what someone suggested earlier regarding
the pencil magnet and it did fit, but not to the narrowed bottom.
Just as another person stated, that the magnetic head was too big.
