Default 1968 Ventelation System

I have been looking for pictures and diagrams of how ventelation system hooks up for a 1968 (late...built in August 68). I pulled the interior and dash pieces out to find no plumming for the astro ventelation or cabling/vacuum. My car has AC so am looking for what what opens the ventelation for the fresh air. Is it the same setup as a 69...vacuum? I appreciate your help.

Try an AIM.....what is the build date or VIN on your car?

Yep. You need the AIM. AC cars have the stock Astro-Ventilation holes blocked off. The only operable one is behind the right kick panel. Vent ***** in the dash will blow cold air with the AC on and outside air when Vent is selected.

I will look at the build date in the door when I go home tonight. Is the build date on the same tag as the interior-exterior tag or where should I look.
I do have a manual but doesn't show exacts...so, you were in the Marines? Joel

Yep. Upper righthand corner of the trim tag. You should find an M date. The last '68 was assembled the week of 8/16/68 and she was #28,566. 27,089 is is only 1477 shy of the end of production.

Here is a site with pics of my car when I bought it last summer. http://mustangenthusiasts.net/1968_corvette.htm The guy told me it had a 350 in it but turned out to be 307 out of a 69-73 whatever. Other than that some things might be wrong like the driver door mirror and the radiator overflow. I bought a 427 390/400hp block built in April 68. The car is primer white right now and the interior is out. Building up my parts bin to start working on the car.

If you have an AC original car, then you dont have astro ventillation, the AV was for Non AC cars only

Ok, I looked up my tag. It says "L29"...so this would mean July 29th? Almost an August car.
I was looking at some other replies...If I have ac then I don't have astro ventilation. If I have my ac off but want ventilation then the lever in my center console would open the side doors (buy the kick/speaker panel) via vacuum instead of a mechanical lever in the center console. It's starting to make sense. So, wouldn't this be like the 69 design?

Darrow, that's why I'm here. My car is missing some under dash pluming so am trying to figure out what I'm missing and can not find proper documentation with my shop manual. There are fresh air intakes on the left and right side of the car (by the kick/speaker panel) which have to open and close somehow even though it comes with ac?

My post ( are you sure ) was not to you I have a 74 with astro vent written on the windows but I have factory air and the venting is only on the passinger side but is channeled to both sides.

have you removed the kick panels? on mine the drivers side is blank. Everthing air, vent , heater works from the passenger side my manual shows this. but I don't know about yours .

If you have a/c I think it might be the same. If your questings come from heat in the cab then thats another problem.

Do you have the original assembly manual?
I have looked in several catalogs and can not find a drawing on duct work........

Darrow, I looked in my 1968 Service Manual and it shows a "behind" view of the dash. It does show how the left and right dash vents go into the ac ducting so, I'm good there. My other issue is how does the fresh air ducting hook up. I just took these pictures tonight...see what you think;
Passenger side fresh air inlet area. http://www.mustangenthusiasts.net/In...irvent_002.jpg (click on the picture to enlarge)
I took the door out that would swivel allowing air in and out of the car. Also, above is some king of duct with a spung in it. Don't know what that's about.
Drivers side fresh air inlet http://www.mustangenthusiasts.net/In...irvent_002.jpg (click on the picture to enlarge)
The air inlet door is still there. Hope these pictures give you a better visual.

We're stumbling over semantics here. "Astro-Ventilation" is generic and is the term GM came up with for the fresh air system on the C3s. Technically, all 68-74s have Astro-Ventilation.

For non-AC cars, there are two ducts on each side of the cowl, upper and lower. Uppers route outside air to the vent ***** in the dash. Lowers route outside air through the kick panel vents by way of the VENT ***** on the console. Sliding the VENT **** on the console manually opens or closes the kick panel vents through a Bowden cable. Some years have a **** on the dash which opens or closes air flow through the dash *****. '68s do not have these.

Upper to dash vent *****. Lower to kick panel door.

AC cars have three of the cowl outlets blocked off. Right side only kick panel door opens and closes with vacuum (no Bowden cable) in conjuction with a flapper door under the right fender at the top; cold air through the dash ***** with AC on; outside air through the kick panel and dash ***** when the system is off of AC and on vent.

Right side AC car. Kick panel vent vacuum operated. Flapper door covers the upper cowl vent.

There is also an Astro-Ventilation vent on the rear bulkhead. Cabin air is supposed to vent out of the car through this exit. On some AC cars, the bulkhead vent is also vacuum operated and is either open or closed depending upon AC or vent.

Note bulkhead Astro-Ventilation vent just above the tape measure to the left of the rear deck vents.

This whole talk was about the system on a 68, and they do not have Astro Ventelation with AC. They also do not use the rear vents either as all they have is a water drain connection on them and no air exit to them at all on AC cars. But I think this subject has been beat to death.
