Default T&T Column assembly question (77)

Installed new bearings. Having to much trouble pushing in lock plate which leads me to beleive Im not installing new bearings correctly.
1st I installed outer bearing shell.
2nd installed bearing.
3rd inner race/shell.
Somehow I've managed to get two inner bearings..which one is correct left or right?

Here is a pic of the installed bearing

Thanks as always!!

TTT for you: Having trouble with getting the lockplate to cooperate (compress) doesn't necessarily mean that you have the bearings installed incorrectly.. Its just a tight fit.
However, I have my '79 apart right now and in your 1st picture it is the one on the left that goes in the inside of the bearing.

looks good i have had my 77 t/t column apart several times for different reasons and that plate is a pain in the butt. There is a tool for compressing the spring with the plate in place ( lock ring compressor) that saves finger tips and time

When using the lock plate compressor tool you do need to lock the upper shaft from telescoping. Shove the upper shaft in to its shortest length. Install the "star" screw and tighten it. If the "star" screw interferes with your tool, then obtain a 5/16-18 UNC set screw (#20 Allen screw) and install it in place of the "star" screw.

Now your locking plate compressor will work.

Just a quick question in relation to this thread...

When putting the lock plate back on, does the round hole face towards the top of the column, or the bottom?

I am not at home so I don't have direct access to my Disassembly &
Repair papers. I am sure that there is a comment in my D&R paper #1 that talks about the "long" flat and the "short" flat on the stationary upper steering shaft. The locking plate has to slide onto that shaft with the locking plate in a certain orientation. I suggest going to www.corvettefaq.com
Click on Jim Shea's Steering Articles
Click on Corvette Steering Papers
Scroll down to the Tilt & Telescoping Steering Papers
Download Paper #1

At the end of the paper there is a description as to how to assemble the locking plate.

I can provide the description on Monday if you can wait.

Jim - Thanks for the response. I recall reading about that, but I couldn't determine the difference between the short and long side, as they seem very close. I may figure it out today, and if I do I will post here. Thanks again.
