Default Identifying Trans?

OK, so '75 L48 Coup doesn't have any of the A.I.R equipment on it. I'm not trying to restore to NCRS standards but would like the repairs and work I do to be correct and accurate. I've been reviewing the NCRS judging guide and it says:
All 1975-1977 Corvettes are equipped with an A.I.R system in St. Louis with the exception of 1975-1977 L48 with M-40 Turbo-Hydramatic Transmission
My car is an automatic and later in the quide it indicates all '75's had a Turby Hyrdramatic 400.

I assume M-40 was some sort of option or derivite of transmissions available? How do I identify an M-40 Transmission? Where is it on the transmission?

M-40 is always a Turbo 400 (I think), the trans pan is shaped sorta like Texas.

On the driver's side, just above the pan flange, the VIN derivative will be stamped pnto a little flat area. (upside down if I remember correctly).

TH400s are supposed to have a tag on them identifying them as TH400s. Either model, 350 or 400, will have GM part number on it.

Your 75 should have a TH-400. The model # and sequence number are located below the production code on the ID plate on the right side of the trannie case. Example: 75K201
75= MY
K= Model Ident
201= Production Date (Feb 1)
L-48=K
L-82=Z

...the NCRS Guide is incorrect on this one. All 1975 Corvettes, regardless of motor or transmission type had A.I.R. It was also the first year of the catalytic converter. Some(not California emission cars)'76 & '77 L-48 automatic cars did not have smog.

...if your 1975 has the original tune up label on it, you'll see where it says "A.I.R., EFE, EGR, OC Exhaust", meaning it was originally equipped with a smog pump, carbon canister & early fuel evaporation, EGR valve & catalytic converter exhaust system.

Doh! I was hoping it meant that I could find a way to identify my Trans an M-40 and not need to add the A.I.R. to correct it.
